State of MMA
So, the other day I’m driving back from a Muay Thai seminar thinking about something    a fight coach said that, at first, offended me.  He said that he has got a real problem with aspiring “fighters” in this area.  Those people who train in D.C. MMA gyms, and train hard mind you, but are unwilling to fight.  He said that for all the help and motivation, the blood and sweat, it all means nothing if you don’t get into the ring (or cage.)  You know what?  He is absolutely right!

I have noticed things here in the D.C. area that I haven’t really seen in other gyms in other states.  For instance, what about those guys who while sparring will punch in the general vicinity of his opponent’s face but come up short…on purpose!  What the hell is that?  And I have seen that in a lot of gyms around here.  Are we afraid to actually hit somebody?  According to the aforementioned fight coach, the guys up in Ohio will accept any excuse to deck a fool.

Fact is, MMA is now legal in D.C.  There is no more having to travel up north or down south to fight.  What does that mean?  I don’t know but I will tell what I hope it means…D.C. becomes a fighter breeding ground.  On the down side?  McDojos WILL start cropping up.  The same thing that happened to TKD and karate will happen to MMA because there is money to be made and idiots to take advantage of.  It sucks that there will be liars out there starting businesses telling you that they are the real deal and can make a competent fighter out of you all the while snatching $200+ of your hard earned dollars away.  Sucks, but it will happen.  So, for the fight scene here in D.C. I hope that everyone that calls themselves a fan will support it, for those of you looking to turn a quick buck…God help you.
