“This was a terrific night for the sport of Mixed Martial Arts in the greater Washington , DC , area and we appreciate everyone’s support and enthusiasm,” said Ultimate Warrior Sports Development CEO S. Marcello Foran. “We were thrilled to present this amazing crowd with world-class bouts and true global superstars of the cage and look forward to bringing the UWC back to the Washington Metro area in the near future.”
Fans were treated to nine professional fights featuring a diverse collection of nationally-recognized and local-based fighters. Some of best gyms/teams from across the county, from Brazil and from the region were represented. There was plenty of star-power outside the cage as well with some of the sport’s biggest superstars -- Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski, Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Hermes Franca, and Brandon Vera – signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans.
In the Main Event, Pete Spratt, a winner from season four’s The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) series imposed his strength and striking power to score an impressive knockout of Jason Von Flue. Von Flue, a TUF season two veteran, was never able to effectively utilize his ground attack against the superior Spratt who kept on his feet despite the best efforts of his opponent.
In the Featured Fight, Thomas Schulte wasted no time in gaining a submission over Zach Light, Rampage’s assistant coach from this season’s TUF, serving as the aggressor early and scoring submission just 1:20 into the match.
Aaron Riley – the only participant who has fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), PRIDE, International Fight League and Bodog – displayed some technically solid skills and an aggressive tenacity en route to a unanimous decision over Thiago Minu. Despite suffering a bloody gash on his head created by an elbow, the Northern Virginia resident took charge late in the first round and used his experience to control action.
Former Bowie , MD , native and hometown favorite Marcus Foran kept Baltimore ’s Tenyah Dixon on the defensive throughout the first round before finally finishing off his taller opponent with an armbar submission at 4:04 in round two.
Mike Easton demonstrated strong striking power as well as a flair for showmanship in taking out Gerald Lovato with a KO. Easton landed a devastating right that knocked out Lovato’s mouthpiece and sent him reeling. Sensing the advantage, the Maryland native pressed forward and finished Lovato off with a flurry of punches at 2:48 of the first round.
In a battle of former All-American wrestlers-turned-MMA heavyweights, Josh Feldman, a Navy pilot and Virginia Tech graduate, unleashed a barrage of first-round strikes that wobbled and knocked out former George Mason University star Johnny Curtis. Curtis initiated the early action, but was staggered with spot-on right followed by a barrage of strikes that ultimately proved too much for the Fairfax H.S. graduate who collapsed against the cage and was counted out just over a minute into the first round.
Mike Corey won by a technical knockout over Dwayne Shelton just 33 seconds into the second round, after dominating the first round by keeping his Richmond opponent pinned against the mat or cage for almost the entire time.
Carlo Prater could not put Marcelo Brito away in regulation, but won a unanimous decision after dominating Brito throughout the three-round match. The closest Prater came to ending the bout early is when he threw Brito down 20 seconds into the third round, but Brito escaped submission.
Frank Trigg and Jay Adams served as color commentator and analyst for the event, which will be broadcast later this spring/summer on HD Net, Fight Network (UK and Canada), and on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.
Organizers announced plans to secure an August - September 2008 date at the Patriot Center for its next Ultimate Warrior Challenge event in the immediate future.
