SMASH MMA Review
Coming into SMASH MMA's debut event at the Patriot Center this Friday, I am going to admit I was a little nervous.   The show was shaping up to be one of the largest in the area and was the first mma event on George Mason's campus.  A good show could be parleyed into new fans and increased media opportunities...And it was being run by boxing people.

However, by the end of SMASH, it was obvious that Jimmy Lange Enterprises and Ice Promotions, can now be labeled mma promoters also.  The show was very well run and where other shows have struggled with finding local talent with arranging competitive matches, SMASH did the right thing and consulted local experts and put together a card that was well-balanced and competitive.

The card was headlined by the 3rd meeting of veteran fighters Travis Wiuff and Travis Fulton, but the two fighters from One Spirit Martial Arts may have been the largest draws (and put on the best fights).  Coming off features in the Washington Post and www.bloodyknux.com, GMU alum and all-everything wrestler Johnny Curtis made his pro debut quickly defeating Bill Clifford with a quick Couture-like clinch against the cage into takedown into ground and pound.  His teammate Rashad Woods was also victorious with a first round TKO of Adam Lehman.

The event also featured two other highlights with Chris Reedy handing the DC area its only loss of the night by submitting Kyle Baker with an incredible flying triangle submission and Team Hybrid's Antwain Britt issuing a second challenge to the main event fighters after another dominating victory.

Overall there was only really one dud out of the 10 fights.  2 low blows and ten minutes of stoppage time due to those low blows combined with tentative (Im being nice) striking led to unrest by the fans during Phillip Wyman's majority decision over Antonio Grant.

It should also be noted that the DC area went 7-1 against opponents primarily from California, proving once again that the DC area is one of the top areas for mixed martial arts talent in the nation.
