DC Metro Showdown 3: DVD Review
A couple of weeks back I wrote a review about the DC Metro Showdown 3 in Landsdowne, VA on the DCMMA blog.  I wrote about some goods and, of course, some bads of the show.  I didn’t write it as an article for dcmma.com because all of what I wrote were opinions and opinions of people I knew that went to the show.  Dcmma.com showcases only the facts so that’s why I only blogged the review.

Now, let’s get to the point.  Brooks Miller, owner of Khun Kao Promotions, was a good sport about the criticism except for one thing.  He didn’t agree with me that the 15 dollar price tag for the show’s DVD was too costly for the product you received.  So, he sent dcmma.com a promotional DVD of the event so we could review it properly and here is what we think:

Starting off at the Title menu screen you are met with a short clip of the ring and the audience behind it.  It recycles as music is played in the background.  When you first hear the music it really surprises you, one viewer said it sounded like wedding music.  I agreed it definitely could be used as such but it was endearing.  I don’t know why the editor of the DVD chose that selection but it reminded me of old boxing/fighting movies that feature symphonic music to contrast with the violence in the ring.   Almost like trying to say that boxing is in fact the sweet science and deserves to be prestigious.

Every fight is captioned with the fighter’s names, schools, and corner designations.  It looked very clean and big enough to see.  Also, it only lasted long enough to end when the fighting started (good!)  I would have liked to see each fighter’s record, though.

The camera was shooting from a single angle, from one of the corners into the ring.  The picture was crisp and clear and nothing got in the way except for the ref sometimes.  I would have liked to see another angle being shot so that when the ref got in the way, the editor could just go to the other camera angle.

The sound was good, I could hear every shout from the cornermen clearly (red corner’s, especially.)  The traditional Muay Thai music sounded awesome on the DVD.  It really helped make the fight more authentic and exciting to watch.  In-person, it was extremely loud but on the DVD it doesn’t overpower all the sounds from the action in the ring.

Overall, if I had to score this DVD it would be 7 out of 10.  I’m giving extra points because it’s not done professionally but still looks good.  I should also point out that Khun Kao Promotions had this DVD available within a week of the event.  This DVD is a must for those who attended and definitely for people interested in having a rare copy of the early days of DC’s fight scene.  Shows are now emerging left and right in this Metropolitan area like crazy, you can own footage of the roots.  Support  your local fight scene!
