The theme for Acttain Promotions and their Baddest Man on the Planet event November 10th in Manassas was action meets entertainment.   And for better or worse, the 1st event in the Baddest Man on the Planet series definitely attempted to deliver action and entertainment at every opportunity.

From freestyle motocross demonstrations, to bikini contests, to DJs and a live band rarely were any of your senses not in overload for 4 solid hours.  The entire night was definitely unique and unlike any other show in the area, however the desire to differentiate themselves from the other promoters in town may end up hurting the BMOTP series. 

While the gimmicks and fun distractions were great before and after the fights, the gimmicks and distractions were part of the fights at BMOTP.  From modified rules like the first round being fought under traditional MMA rules, the second round being stand-up fighting only and the third round back to MMA, to a fight where the winner was going to be decided by the fans if it went the distance, the fightcard was full of fights that looked like MMA but weren't really. 

Another problem that seemed to hurt the show was conflicting events possibly hurting its ability to get fighters from top MMA schools.  While we will never speak poorly of fighters who get into the ring, the absence of the larger schools seemed to lead to greener fighters.  The result was all but 2 MMA fights ending in the first round (most quickly) and none making it to the third.

Overall though, for a first time promoter the show was pretty good.  Personally I would feel a lot more comfortable in the fun and games stayed outside the ring, but with another installment scheduled for February 9th hopefully Acttain can learn from this event and build on its many positives.
